IHAMBE STATUE

Tiv, Nigeria

Height : 56 cm    Age : early 20th century, or older

Materials :
wood, pigments

Impressive female statue of rough style with a beautiful patina. In the past, the Tiv tribe moved to the fertile area of the Benue River in southeastern Nigeria and gradually expanded farms to neighboring Cameroon. In their distinctive carving style are influences of the surrounding tribes, with which they were in contact with the gradual settlement. There are significant scarification marks on the sculptor in the face and abdomen, which in real life bring the woman fertility and the safety of the family background.
